Who Is Dolores Cannon? A Pioneer of Regression Hypnotherapy

If you have ever been curious about past life regression, the subconscious mind, or the deeper mysteries of human consciousness, chances are you have come across the name Dolores Cannon. Her work has touched millions of people around the world, and her method — Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, or QHHT® — continues to transform lives long after her passing in 2014.

But who was Dolores Cannon, really? And what made her approach so different from anything that had come before?

A Life Dedicated to the Unknown

Dolores Cannon was born in 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was, by her own description, an ordinary housewife and mother — until a chance encounter in the 1960s changed everything.

Her husband, a US Navy officer, had trained in hypnosis as a hobby. Together, they began working with a client to help with weight loss. What happened during one of those sessions was entirely unexpected: the woman began speaking as though she were living in a completely different era, describing a past life in vivid, specific detail.

Rather than dismissing what they had witnessed, Dolores was captivated. She spent the next several decades — over fifty years in total — exploring this phenomenon with thousands of clients across the globe. What began as curiosity became a life's calling.

The Development of QHHT®

Dolores did not simply adopt existing hypnotherapy techniques. She developed her own method, refining it over decades of practice and research. The result was Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, or QHHT®.

At the heart of QHHT® is the belief that every person carries within them a part of themselves that holds all the answers — a higher aspect of the self that Dolores called the Subconscious (sometimes referred to as the Higher Self or the Oversoul). This is not the subconscious of everyday psychology. It is something far vaster: a part of you that exists beyond the limitations of the physical body and the current lifetime.

QHHT® works by guiding a client into the somnambulistic state — a deep level of hypnosis that most people only pass through briefly as they fall asleep or wake up. In this state, the Subconscious can be directly accessed and communicated with. It can show the client scenes from past lives, parallel lives, or other experiences that are most relevant to their healing and understanding. And crucially, it can answer questions — about health, relationships, life purpose, and the nature of existence itself.

What Happens in a QHHT® Session?

A QHHT® session is a deeply personal and often profound experience. It typically lasts between three and four hours, and it begins long before the hypnosis itself.

The first part of the session is a conversation — a thorough interview in which the practitioner listens to the client's life story, their questions, and the things they most want to understand or heal. This is not a formality. It is an essential part of the process, because the Subconscious uses this information to choose what to show the client during the hypnosis.

Once the client is in the somnambulistic state, they may be shown one or more past lives — or other experiences entirely. Dolores found that the Subconscious always shows what is most needed, not necessarily what the client expects. A person who comes in asking about a physical ailment might be shown a past life that holds the emotional root of that condition. Someone seeking clarity about their relationships might witness a scene that reframes everything they thought they understood.

After exploring these scenes, the practitioner speaks directly with the Subconscious. This is where the real healing can occur. The Subconscious can explain what was shown, answer the client's questions, and — if it is appropriate and the client is ready — perform what Dolores described as instant healing: a direct shift in the body or the energy field that can resolve long-standing physical or emotional issues.

The Importance of Belief and Readiness

One of the most important things Dolores taught was that the Subconscious will only share what the client is ready to receive. It will never overwhelm or harm. It acts, always, in the highest interest of the individual.

This is why QHHT® is not something that can be forced or rushed. The practitioner's role is to create a safe, open, and non-judgmental space — and then to step aside and allow the client's own inner wisdom to do the work.

Dolores was also clear that belief is not a prerequisite. You do not need to believe in past lives for QHHT® to be effective. The Subconscious works with whatever framework is most useful to the individual. What matters is openness and a genuine desire to understand and heal.

A Body of Work That Spans Decades

Over the course of her career, Dolores Cannon published nineteen books. These include her celebrated Convoluted Universe series, The Three Waves of Volunteers and the New Earth, Between Death and Life, and The Custodians — a deep exploration of what her clients described as extraterrestrial contact.

Her books are not fiction. They are transcripts and accounts drawn directly from her sessions, compiled and presented with her characteristic warmth, curiosity, and lack of judgement. Reading them, you encounter a woman who was genuinely astonished by what she discovered — and who never stopped being astonished, even after fifty years.

She also founded the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Academy (QHHA), through which she trained practitioners around the world to carry her method forward. Today, thousands of certified QHHT® practitioners work in countries across every continent, continuing the work she began.

Why Her Legacy Matters

Dolores Cannon passed away in October 2014, but her influence has only grown since then. Her books continue to sell. Her method continues to be practised and taught. And the questions she spent her life exploring — Who are we? Why are we here? What happens when we die? — remain as alive and urgent as ever.

What made Dolores so remarkable was not just her method, but her attitude. She approached the most extraordinary material with the matter-of-fact curiosity of a researcher who simply wanted to understand. She did not sensationalise. She did not preach. She listened, she recorded, and she shared what she found — leaving it to each reader and client to draw their own conclusions.

For those of us who work with QHHT® today, she is more than a founder. She is a reminder of what is possible when we approach the human mind — and the human soul — with genuine reverence and an open heart.

If you are curious about experiencing QHHT® for yourself, I would love to hear from you. Every session is unique, and every person carries within them a wisdom that is waiting to be heard.
